Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer, often referred to as the "Golden City," is a stunning desert town located in the state of Rajasthan, India. It is known for its golden sandstone architecture, which glows with a honey-gold hue, especially at sunset, creating a mesmerizing effect. Situated in the heart of the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
This massive fort, built in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal, is one of the largest in the world. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and houses several palaces, Jain temples, and havelis (mansions) within its walls. The fort still has a thriving community living inside, making it one of the few "living forts" in the world.
Jaisalmer is famous for its intricate and grand havelis built by wealthy merchants during the 18th and 19th centuries. Some of the most notable ones include:
- Patwon Ki Haveli: A cluster of five havelis with elaborate carvings and mirror work.
- Nathmal Ki Haveli: Known for its ornate architecture, it was built by two brothers who created different parts of the mansion simultaneously.
- Salim Singh Ki Haveli: Recognizable by its distinctive roof, which resembles a peacock, and the lavish interiors.
